“You can’t do this alone,” I often tell people who come to me feeling isolated in their new country. “And the good news is, you don’t have to.”
When you move abroad, you leave behind everything familiar—family, friends, coworkers, and even those casual connections that once felt small but now seem incredibly important. Suddenly, you’re in a place where you have to start over, and the weight of that can feel overwhelming. The lack of a built-in support system can be one of the hardest things to face, but I want you to remember this: the connections you make abroad can completely transform your experience and your life in ways you never expected.
The first step toward building your new community is to put yourself out there.
I know it feels daunting, especially when you're still adjusting to a new culture and environment, but every meaningful relationship begins with a simple hello. Whether it's joining a local meet-up, attending a cultural event, or signing up for a class that excites you, these actions will help you meet people who are also eager to make new connections. I’ll never forget the first time I decided to volunteer at a community center after moving abroad. I was nervous about not knowing anyone, but that small act led me to meet people who became not just acquaintances, but lifelong friends.
One of the most beautiful aspects of living abroad is the incredible diversity of people you’ll encounter.
You’re not just connecting with people from your home country—you’re forming bonds with individuals from all over the world. These connections aren’t just valuable because of what they add to your life in terms of companionship; they challenge you to see the world through entirely different perspectives. Some of the deepest friendships I’ve had abroad were with people whose cultural backgrounds were worlds apart from mine. These relationships taught me new ways of thinking, different approaches to problem-solving, and, most importantly, helped me grow in ways I never imagined.
Building a global community doesn’t happen overnight. It takes time, effort, and a willingness to step outside your comfort zone.
However, the effort is absolutely worth it. As you form these bonds, you begin to create a network of people who support, laugh with, and encourage you. These relationships will become your anchor in a foreign land, giving you a sense of belonging and stability. And when your journey abroad comes to an end, the friendships you’ve made will stay with you, creating a global network that spans countries and cultures, allowing you to continue learning and growing wherever life takes you.
Don’t be afraid to take that first step
So, if you’re feeling alone or uncertain about forming relationships, don’t be afraid to take that first step. Accept invitations, strike up conversations, and embrace every opportunity to connect. The friendships you form abroad will not only enrich your life during your time overseas but will also shape the person you become in ways you’ll cherish forever. These connections are the heart of your international experience, and they are waiting for you to reach out and make them yours.
