What does authenticity actually means?

Know yourself + Own yourself + Be yourself = The Authentic Life (source: Stephen Joseph)

Simply said, authenticity means that you are living your life according to your own personal values you think highly of. It means that you are transparent, genuine and honest to yourself and to others. You have a high self-awareness. Your values, ideals and actions are aligned and you take responsibility for them.

Why should you embrace authenticity and how does it empower you?

Authentic empowerment is about feeling safe and secure in who you are and what you know to be true for yourself. It comes from within you.

The importance lies in the fact that it contributes to your whole being when your actions align with your true nature. It helps you in your well-being, your happiness, your fulfillment, and adds to your self-esteem.

Why should you be careful with authenticity?

Despite the fact that authenticity is all about being natural, realizing our needs while considering others is not easy at all.

Loving yourself fully and being brave enough to share the whole, true you may result in disappointment and hurt. You might feel rejected for who you truly are rather than for who you are pretending to be. So, it takes courage and vulnerability to put yourself out there according to your own personal values.

As Brene Brown writes, “Authenticity has a strong link with vulnerability. Vulnerability is the birthplace of love, belonging, joy, courage, empathy, and creativity. It is the source of hope, empathy, accountability, and authenticity.

Vulnerability and authenticity form part of our hard-wired need for connection and together they stop us from dehumanizing people and help us develop valuable relationships”.

Real authenticity can also feel challenging because we’re seeing the truth and the truth isn’t always pleasant. Moreover, we’re seeing somebody demonstrating their strength and that can make us feel as though we’re being judged.

Taken the above mentioned challenges in consideration, a solid balance between practising authenticity and social intelligence is very important in the communication between you and others.

How to practice authenticity

Here are 10 signs you are being authentic to yourself and to others:

Be ..

  • Trustworthy and reliable
  • Honest in expressing your opinions
  • Accepting in feeling the responsibility for own faults
  • Genuine and friendly in personality
  • Compassioned and not judgmental
  • Respectful
  • Continuously reflecting self
  • Generous
  • Self-loved and don’t please others
  • Transparent in being, feeling and communication

Also, ask yourself these following questions on a daily basis (source: Stephen Joseph):

  • Do you feel free to make your own choices?
  • Do you feel free to express your own views and opinions?
  • Do you feel you can be yourself on a day-to-day basis?

If you answer negative to one of these 3 questions, then reflect further on this final question:

  • Could it be that you are not being true to who you are? ..
